Regatta Success!

Thanks to everyone who participated in Rowing PEI’s first ever Regatta. We had a great day on the water with a super lunch to follow.  Thank you especially to the umpires and other race officials who spent the morning on the water.  We are very excited to have had twenty participants!!  That is almost half of the club participating, including some of our new Learn to Row graduates.

The ten teams were selected in a blind draw.  The pairings included a range of age and experience level, which added to the excitement of the competition.

In the end, the winning team was Hannah Gibson and Jason Steeves, followed by Nathan Gibson and Nancy Russell.  The third place team consisted of Aleya Quilty and Laura Daudelin.  Congrats to everyone who participated.  It was a steep learning curve, rowing out and racing on a course for the first time.  But we all learned a lot.

Special thanks to our team of umpires: Stephen Murray, Liza Jamani, Mary Lynne Bruvels and Stephen’s son Andrew. Andrew also hopped in a boat at the last minute and competed with Amir! Mike Gibson coordinated on the docks and Nancy Russell organized the lunch.

Unfortunately, due to the busy schedules of our umpires, we are not able to have another regatta this season. But we will definitely do it again next year!

Row-ga

Okay, maybe we didn’t look quite like this at our Rowing PEI Row-ga class! But half a dozen rowers enjoyed a 30 minute class with Certified Yoga Instructor Nancy Russell, followed by a row. Namaste.

Social Events

regatta13

We are planning on a season wrap-up meal after our work party in early October. We will need lots of hands on the dock to get our boats safely into storage for the winter. Stay tuned for a date and time.

Time Changes

Here’s an update from Rowing PEI President Michael Gibson on changes to the rowing schedule:

Hey Folks,
Our summer rowing season is coming to an end. I hope people have enjoyed themselves. I have added the fall schedule to SignupGenius. We have five weeks left. You will notice there are only two more weeks of weekday morning rows and the start time has shifted to 6:30 due to the later sunrise. Wear layers as the mornings are getting cooler. We are hoping to get our evening rows starting a little earlier, starting at 5:45 pm, as we have to be off the water at least 15 minutes before our ever earlier sunset.

We suspect Saturday October 4 may be the day we have to remove our boats from the docks and place them into storage. We will need lots of hands to help and will schedule our final social event for after the work. Once we have confirmed the date I will put a signup on SignupGenius for the work detail.

We would like to use the winter season to get more people certified to be safety boat operators and complete the certification for those who started that process this summer. When we confirm the closing day I will also place a signup for people interested in working toward or completing that certification. The more safeties we have the easier it is for us to deliver a full schedule.

Thanks to everyone for a windy but wonderful summer.

Summer LTR

regatta17

Thanks to Summer LTR coordinator Stephen Murray, Ernie Morello, Mary Lynne Bruvels, Travis Cheverie and all the other LTR coaches who helped guide us through our biggest Learn to Row program ever with 36 participants. We look forward to seeing many of these new rowers on the water next spring as full members.

Congrats L2s!

Congratulations also to all of our new L2 rowers! You make it possible for us to offer even more seats on every row. Thanks for taking up the challenge.

We hope to continually boost our number of L2 and L3 rowers next season. Please talk to one of the coaches about how to take the next step if you are interested in becoming an L2 or L3.

We encourage you to take advantage of the remaining weeks in our 2014 rowing schedule. There are still many beautiful days left before we put the boats away. See you on the docks!
