Coastal Rowing Rocks!

P.E.I. has an ambitious new goal. We want to become one of Canada’s coastal rowing hotspots. We already have one of the country’s largest fleets of coastal boats, along with Alma Quebec and Toronto. We are in the planning stages of setting up a secondary rowing site where we could “wet launch” our coastal boats, and eventually host tours as well as competitive events. P.E.I. has an abundance of beautiful beaches and we think we can become a world-class host for coastal rowing.
If you’re interested in finding out more, get in touch with on of our Board of Directors. The International Rowing Federation or FISA hopes to have coastal rowing in the 2020 Olympics. So this is a big opportunity. Stay tuned.

ROWING P.E.I.’S NEW WHEELS!

A new trailer may sound like a minor accomplishment for a sporting organization. But this is big news for our rowing club.   It means we can now transport their fleet of boats to regional and even national competitions.

“Being mobile is a huge deal,” says Rowing P.E.I. president Michael Gibson, who is also the club’s highest-level coach. “As we prepare for the next Canada Games, it’s crucial that we are able to get our young Island athletes to regional competitions. This will keep them developing at the same rate as other rookie rowers in the Maritimes.”

“We can also now offer competitive opportunities as well as touring to the Masters rowers in our club,” adds Gibson.

Power UP with Rowing P.E.I.!

Thanks to the 15 competitors who took on the challenge at our first ever Power Up event at Holland College’s Charlottetown Campus on Saturday November 29, 2014.

Island athletes of all ages were invited to climb on an erg and find out how they stack up against Canada’s top rowers.

We teamed up with Holland College, Rowing Canada Aviron, ParticipACTION, CBC and True Sport in celebrating the Power of Sport through RBC’s Sports Day in Canada.

There were some impressive efforts, including some top times from two first time rowers/Holland College soccer players. We also had some LTR grads and a couple of rowing rookies taking part.

Thanks to all the volunteers who worked on the Power Up event – and special kudos to Mike and Hannah Gibson who put together a great video from the event. You can check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edATBwzlD_U

Indoor Rowing Rocks!

erging 1

Rowing P.E.I. is teaming up with the owners of the gym upstairs at the Stratford Indoor Soccer Complex to offer erging workouts every Saturday morning. LTR Coach and Certified Yoga Instructor Nancy Russell sends out an email at the start of each week for members who are interested in signing up. Sessions are $10 to cover the cost of gym rental. We are also hoping to hold our own Indoor Rowing Time Trials, with special guests who want to try out rowing.

Summerside’s Emily Cameron Nominated Again

for P.E.I. Senior Female Athlete of the Year

We always enjoy getting together with Team Canada rower Emily Cameron, from Summerside. This fall, Emily traveled to Brazil with some other members of the rowing team to check out the venues for the 2016 Summer Olympics. She also competed at the Canadian Rowing Championships, finishing second in the women’s singles. And for the second year in a row, she is nominated for P.E.I.s Senior Female Athlete of the year.

emily christmas

Emily joined us again in December during her Christmas “break”. Though it’s not much of a break if you hear about her daily training regimen! Emily has an exciting year ahead…including working as a mentor to a new competitive rowing team in the Caribbean. Stay tuned for more details.

Rowing P.E.I.’s Annual General Meeting will be held Saturday March 28, 2015 11:00 a.m. at the Holland College Royalty Centre. (We will post room number!)   All members are welcome to participate. Social event to follow.

We are always looking for “new recruits”. If you’d like to join us on the board, or on the water as a coach or safety driver, please contact us at rowingpei@gmail.com. We’d love to have more hands on deck!
