Celebrating the 2015 Graduates of Learn to Row!

Thanks to everyone who attended our Club barbeque and Learn to Row graduation.  It was a beautiful sunny morning and we had a great spread of food, including honey garlic sausages from the Charlottetown Farmer’s Market!  Kudos to Jason Steeves and Greg Clayton for a great job on the barbeque.  And thank you to all who contributed to a wonderful feast.  We also enjoyed meeting your families! We hope they enjoyed getting to see what you’ve been up to!

Thank you also to all of the safeties and LTR coaches and L2s who made it possible for us to train this enthusiastic new group of rowers.  We hope many of these graduates will become L2s and help with future groups of Learn to Row candidates.

If you are not converting — and there are many reasons why– we hope you will take away good memories of your Learn to Row experience. If you are becoming a full member, welcome to Rowing P.E.I.

Thanks! Nancy

The weather is looking good for our Rowing PEI barbeque coming up at 11:30 on Saturday.  (Knock on wood!)   All members are invited to attend – plus your families. We will be handing out certificates to our 2015 class of Learn to Row graduates.  Please RSVP so we know if we need more sausages.  And if you don’t eat sausages, feel free to bring something else to cook on the barbeque.

We will be supplying sausages – but the rest of the event is potluck!  If you can bring something along, that would be great. There is a list of what we need on Sign Up Genius.  Thanks!
A gentle reminder that we need the money to go along with your LTR Conversion to Full Membership.  The eTransfers are working well – or you can bring along cash or cheques to the barbeque.
We will be having our 2nd annual Red, White and Row on Canada Day – July 1st – from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.  We will have pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream after the row!  Sign up soon so we know what kind of numbers to expect.  We can add a second row if there is interest.  Everyone is invited to dress up in red and white as part of our celebration of Canada Day.
FYI – Mike Gibson is working on a “wet launch” practice session on Saturday following the barbeque.  If you’re going to Alma, this would be a great opportunity.  If you’re just interested, or want to help, please let Mike know.
As always – stay tuned to notifications from Sign Up Genius.  We’re doing our best to stay on top of this unpredictable June weather.  We hope you’re enjoying your rows.  And please keep in touch with any feedback.
Thanks!  Nancy – for the Rowing PEI Board of Directors

Rower with P.E.I. Connections Heading to University Games in South Korea

A rower with P.E.I. connections is heading to the 2015 University Games in South Korea.
Will Bryden will be competing in men’s double scull.  He currently attends Brock University in Ontario.  Will’s parents, Russ and Lea, moved to the Island last year.  Russ is training to be a safety boat operator and Lea has offered to help with the board.
Will will be on the Island this summer, after his trip to South Korea.  We’re hoping he can get out in the coach boat and talk to our members about his competitive experience.

Good luck in South Korea, Will!

Here’s the news release from Rowing Canada Aviron:

This summer, Canadian University’s most talented rowers will represent Canada at the FISU Games in Gwangju, South Korea, July 3 to 14, 2015.  The 2015 Universiade is a multisport event in which rowing has been a part since 1984.  This year the regatta will take place on Chungju Tangeum Lake, site of the 2013 World Rowing Championships.

Pete Somerwil, president of the Canadian University Rowing Association (CURA) says ‘After an extensive selection process, we feel that we’ve put together competitive crews and look forward to bringing home medals earned by Canadian University student-athletes.  These athletes from Universities coast to coast have not only committed to the training but are funding themselves to represent their country’.

Once selected, the women’s program was hosted by the University of Western Ontario Boat Club.  The heavyweight men and lightweight men’s sweep program was hosted by Brock University Rowing Club, and the lightweight men’s sculling program hosted by Ottawa Rowing Club. The CURA and Canadian Interuniversity Sport have worked closely to ensure the success of the program.

The Canadian University Rowing Association is proud to nominate the following:

Men’s Double Scull

Mark Alm – Brock University

William Brydon – Brock University

  1. Log back onto your account with Rowing Canada.  You will need either your RCA number or username. There is a button if you have forgotten them.

Click on Join a Rowing Program/Register
Select PEI and Rowing PEI
Click on Learn to Row 2015 – Upgrade to Full Membership – JOIN

  1. Deliver your payment of $275 in cash or cheque to Daphne Dumont’s office – 57 Water Street during regular business hours

****You can also pay by eTransfer.  Send a message to rowingpei@gmail.com and our treasurer Greg Clayton will notify you when it has been accepted.

If you are a family member, the second member pays $215 and the third pays $185.

Once we have received your payment, you are welcome to sign up to row.

Our regular season schedule starts Monday June 15th.  You will now be signing up by boat.

You are currently an L1 (Level One) rower.  You will need to be in a boat with an L2 (Level Two) rower.  You can sign up for a boat and an L2 will sign up with you.  But please don’t sign up with another L1.

In the COMMENT section, please indicate if you are LTR, L1, L2, coach or safety!!!  This is important information for other members and for coaches.

Select a seat by clicking on the box.  And then click on Submit and Sign Up.

That should complete your seat selection.  You can select for more than one row at a time.

You will receive an email reminder of your row 24 hours before the actual row.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at rowingpei@gmail.com

We hope it’s going to be a great season of rowing.  Welcome aboard.
