Meet our new competitive coaches – and more training opportunities!

As the Sport Development Coordinator for Rowing PEI, Stephen Murray would like to congratulate our new RCA Competitive Coaches (trained) for having completed the first weekend of a two weekend intensive course.

This is the first time this course has been offered on PEI thanks to the New Brunswick high performance coach, Chantelle Hanley. We consider ourselves very lucky to have Chantelle provide this course as she is a rowing coach of 35 years and has coached internationally, rowed and competed in the US, UK, Europe and Canada.
These coaches: Nancy Russell, Mary Lynne Bruvels, Heather MacKinnon, Heather Peters and Alex Forbes shared this learning experience with three coaches from the Fredericton Rowing Club.
Having these competitive coaches trained will mean Rowing PEI will be able to offer a masters competitive training program this summer, and support for members who want to travel to regattas this season.
The next opportunities for learning for our members include:
Advanced Boat Rescue, including scenario rescues May 2, 2016 5:30 -9:00 PM.  This course is required if you wish to help out with the safety position for rows.  This would extend to coaches if they perform a dual role.
The Learn to Row Coach training course will be held on May 7th and 8th, 2016. This course is for first year L2 rowers last year and L2 rowers who have not taken this learning before.  The course does remind you early in the season what things to consider to improve your stroke and to provide tips to new rowers to provide a quality experience for LTR and L1s coming into the club this year.
Stephen Murray needs to know ( no later than the April 9th, 2016.  The Advanced Rescue Course and the LTR Coach sessions are limited to 12 to 15 rowers. Please help to make these sections successful by letting Stephen know early.
Trained LTR coaches and Boat Rescue for safeties are essential to allowing Rowing PEI to deliver the volunteer programs we offer without leaving the heavy lifting to a few committed resources.
We are in the process of preparing the schedule for the 2016 season and we would love to include our newer members in the ranks of our volunteers.
