Rowing PEI is looking for athletes between the ages of 14 and 19 interested in trying the sport of rowing.

Rowing is a late entry sport so most rowers in Canada start in their teens.

The age to compete at the 2021 Canada Games in Ontario is 21 and under.

Rowing is 60 to 70 per cent legs! So it’s a great second sport for athletes who have competed in sports like speed skating, biathlon, cross country skiing, swimming, hockey, and soccer. Rowing also requires good core strength.

Rowing PEI had a team of six at the 2017 Canada Games competing in men’s and women’s single sculls and double sculls. They came from soccer, sailing, power-lifting and triathlon as their previous sports! In previous Games, the PEI rowers came from speed skating, gymnastics and athletics. A basic swimming ability is also required.

Rowing is a great crossover sport for athletes who have suffered concussions or other injuries and are looking for a low contact, low impact alternative.

In 2020 and 2021, there will be the opportunity to compete at regattas in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The on water rowing season is quite short on P.E.I., from mid- May to mid-October so the volume of training will increase as the level of competition increases.

Shannon MacAulay, who’s from Mount Herbert, played varsity hockey and for Team Canada. She was scouted by Rowing Canada at the RBC Training Ground and is now training with the Nova Scotia high performance program, with a goal of competing at the 2020 Olympics.
